On December 12, 1921, Edmontonians went to the polls and elected their first female councillor — Izena Ross. In the past century, only 30 women have followed in her footsteps. And, only one has reached the mayor’s chair. Co-hosted by Stacey Brotzel and Kim-Ann Wilson, Searching For Izena: ‘Unwomanly’ Stories of Female Leadership at Edmonton City Hall tells the largely untold stories of trailblazers like Izena. It’s a political journey filled with many twist and turns that you won’t want to miss. A political journey that matters now more than ever. Join us as begin Searching For Izena.

What if the 31 women who served on Edmonton City Council over the past century were never elected. How different would our city look and feel? Would Edmonton be Edmonton?
While Edmonton’s women councillors did all the bread-and-butter work during their terms – budgets, committee meetings etc. – many also brought forward initiatives that made our city more livable, more beautiful, more Edmonton.
The Searching For Izena Project asked two former City of Edmonton historian laureates to take us on a tour of sorts and talk about the incredible, often visionary and sometimes hidden legacies of many of our former female councillors. From the always controversial Talus Dome to our tranquil river valley system to City Hall, join us for a special journey that will change the way you forever look at Edmonton.
Guests: Shirley Lowe, Marlena Wyman
